Linux Letdowns (or Open Source Open Sores)

  • Samba

  • Compiling

  • Why is the option to update my Firefox version ghosted out?!

  • Clunky GUIs

  • Awkward and downright unreliable program interfaces.  Sometimes I think that many open source programmers have never used real software.  They don't seem to have any idea what mainstream users have come to expect in terms of consistency among interfaces and the controls they comprise.

  • Linux isn't Unix.

  • An ill-tempered community who apparently think that all human knowledge falls into two categories:  1) Linux expertise and 2) Stuff that doesn't matter

  • Poor support for multiple monitors and TV tuner cards

  • I haven't tried to set up a wireless network adapter in Linux, but I've heard it can send you scrambling for a good long ethernet cable.

  • Too many different distros.  Talk about reinventing the wheel!  It's no wonder Linux is a mere curiosity to the masses.  And before one of you Linux guys starts in about 'Screw the masses', remember some of those masses are doing Cancer research.  If you Linux folks would agree on one distro and get it right, then the Cancer researcher could take the $600 she going to spend on Vista and buy test tubes with it.
